Day 1 | Sao Paulo
Arriving at Sao Paulo.
Day 2 | Arrival in Sao Paulo
Upon arrival in Sao Paulo, we will start our tour of the city. Sao Paulo is one of the largest cities in the world, with over 21 million residents in the metropolitan area and an urban area spanning nearly a million square kilometers. It is also the economic center of Brazil. We will explore Paulista Avenue, museums, art representations, urban parks, and monuments. Sao Paulo, with its European touch and significant Italian influences, is also home to the largest Japanese community outside Japan. In the evening, we’ll enjoy a fusion of Japanese and Brazilian cuisine at one of the city’s restaurants.
Day 3 | Amazon Region
We will depart in the morning for Manaus, the gateway to the Amazon. Upon arrival, we’ll be greeted by local staff and embark on a 3.5-hour journey to our lodge. We’ll spend four enchanting days in the vast Amazon rainforest, home to over 400 billion trees and a rich variety of plant and animal species. We’ll explore treetop rooms with views of the Rio Negro, take a canoe trip to observe the flooded forest, watch the sunset, and venture out at night to spot caimans. After settling into our lodge, we’ll have dinner and spend the night.
Day 4 | Amazon Region
After breakfast, we’ll take a boat ride through the winding channels of the Amazon. The flooded forest during this season allows us to navigate among the treetops and reach hidden lagoons. We’ll continue our exploration on foot with local river people guiding us, sharing their knowledge of medicinal plants and survival techniques in the rainforest. In the afternoon, we’ll return to the lodge for lunch and relaxation. For those interested, there’s an option to kayak or swim in the river. In the evening, we’ll go on a peaceful canoe ride to observe piranhas, followed by dinner and overnight at the lodge.
Day 5 | Amazon Region
After breakfast, we’ll take a boat to visit a local indigenous community, participate in their ceremonies, and possibly visit a community of river dwellers with a mix of indigenous people and traders. We’ll spend the entire day with them, returning to the lodge in the evening for dinner and overnight.
Day 6 | From the Amazon
to Manaus We’ll start our day early with a morning tour to witness the sunrise and bid farewell to the enchanting Amazon. After breakfast, there’s an opportunity to swim with pink dolphins unique to the Amazon. We’ll return to Manaus for lunch and have the option to explore the massive local food market, tasting unique fruits grown in the Amazon and observing the region’s special fish. In the evening, we’ll explore the city center, visit the local theater/opera house, and attend a performance if possible. We’ll have dinner and return to the hotel for the night.
Day 7 | From Manaus to Brasilia
In the morning, we’ll head to the airport for a flight to Brasilia, the capital of Brazil. Brasilia is known for its modernist architecture, and we’ll visit government buildings and central institutions designed by architect Oscar Niemeyer. We’ll see the Juscelino Kubitschek Bridge and visit a gift market housed in a beautiful French-style building. In the evening, we’ll explore the city, have dinner, and return to the hotel.
Day 8 | From Brasilia to Sao Luis and Bumba meu boi Festival
We’ll depart Brasilia for Sao Luis, the capital of Maranhao state. Sao Luis is the only Brazilian city founded by the French, and its historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Upon arrival, we’ll explore the historic center and have the opportunity to witness one of the most fascinating festivals, Bumba meu boi. This festival is a major cultural event in Brazil, featuring dance, music, costumes, and various performances depicting the story of an ox. We’ll join the festivities and later retire to our hotel for the night.
Day 9 | Lençóis Maranhenses National Park
Today, we’ll venture into the relatively unknown and breathtaking region of Lençóis Maranhenses National Park. The park is famous for its vast, dazzling white sand dunes. During the rainy season, lagoons form between the dunes, creating a stunning landscape. We’ll explore the dunes by off-road vehicles and on foot, immersing ourselves in the beauty of the surroundings. After a day of exploration, we’ll return to Barreirinhas for dinner and overnight.
Day 10 | Preguiças River, National Park, and Atins Fishing Village
Another day of breathtaking landscapes awaits us. We will leave Barreirinhas and travel to the Preguiças River (Lazy River) area. The river, whose name means “lazy,” is a tranquil waterway adorned with abundant aquatic flora and fauna. We will embark on a magical boat ride along the majestic river, passing through dense mangrove forests, tropical fruit trees, and other mini trees adorned with exotic birds and colorful butterflies. We will stop at small settlements along the riverbanks, encounter the beloved capuchin monkeys, and cross the Caburé River, which flows into the sea at one of the beautiful points of northern Brazil. Our journey will lead us to Atins, a romantic fishing village on the beach, near the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park. We’ll enjoy an evening meal and spend the night in the village.
Day 11 | From Atins to Parnaíba River Delta
We continue our exciting journey to new landscapes. We’ll depart in off-road vehicles to reach the pier, where we’ll board a speedboat to cross the mouth of the Parnaíba River. We’ll navigate through the numerous islands that form the river delta, with its waters tinted red by the vibrant aquatic vegetation. Passing through charming towns and encountering the unique Parnaíba dolphins, we’ll reach the mouth of the Parnaíba River, a place where the white dunes extend to meet the magnificent turquoise and blue waters. In the afternoon, we’ll arrive at the enchanting town of Parnaíba, where we’ll spend the night.
Day 12 | From Parnaíba to Jericoacoara
After breakfast, we’ll continue our off-road journey to the town of Camocim, where we’ll take a ferry to “Ilha do Amor” (Island of Love). Exploring the deserted beaches and changing landscapes, we’ll arrive at Lake Tatajuba for lunch. Due to the intense heat, the restaurant’s seats are placed in the lake, utilizing its waters as a natural cooler. We’ll relax on hammocks after the meal. Continuing our liberated tour, we’ll take another ferry to reach the pleasant and always joyful village of Jericoacoara, where we’ll spend the next two nights.
Day 13 | Jericoacoara and Surroundings
Today is dedicated to exploring the Jericoacoara region. We’ll start the morning with a trip to Árvore da Preguiça, an area filled with twisted trees emerging from the sand dunes – a sought-after photography spot in northern Brazil. From there, we’ll visit seasonal lagoons formed between massive sand dunes, including the stunning Lagona Azul and Lagoa do Paraíso, where we can take a refreshing swim. In the evening, we’ll climb the great dune to watch the breathtaking sunset over the sea.
